For a few hours Saturday night, San Manuel may have been the happiest place in Arizona. After all, the 3,500-person town had plenty to celebrate. San Manuel High School won its first softball state title since 1994, and Miners track star Wayne Newman went out a triple champion at the state meet. -

Hall of Fame basketball coach Jerry Conner coming home to Shadow Mountain - AZ Central - 05/14/13
Jerry Conner, who started the boys basketball program in the mid-1970s at Phoenix Shadow Mountain, is returning to lead the Matadors with familiar faces next to him on the bench. Mike Bibby, who led Shadow Mountain to its first state championship in 1996 as a senior point guard, will join Conner’s staff, along with his cousin, Ray Walcott, and Shadow Mountain Athletic Director Mike Warren, who has an extensive basketball coaching background. -

Baseball: Desert Christian wins first title - Tucson Citizen - 05/12/13
Desert Christian (25-4) outlasted Phoenix Christian 11-9 Saturday night to win the school’s first baseball title. Head coach Grant Hopkins has spent the last couple of years preparing his players for the big stage by playing in invitationals with “bigger schools” and by bringing in former Sabino and CDO coach Mike Hanson and his son Ryan Hanson to help coach. Mike has been a coach for over 20 years and Ryan played on Sabino’s 1997 championship team. -

The 2013 Arizona track and field championships started to resemble 2012 a little too closely for Devon Allen’s liking. Almost any other athlete in the state would be ecstatic with two runner-up finishes and a pair of state titles, but the Brophy star is not your average runner. -

It doesn’t make any sense, San Manuel winning the Division IV state softball championship Saturday. Sure, San Manuel was the No. 2 seed, so it wasn’t as if a long postseason run was entirely a surprise . Still, the Miners had one senior and five freshmen among the 12 players on their roster. San Manuel’s starting pitcher, Lyana Waddell, is a freshman. Its best hitter, Felicia Medina, is a sophomore. -
Gillick leads Eagle girls to 2nd place - AZ Sun - 05/10/13
Flagstaff High School's Tatiana Gillick became a Division II state champion Wednesday for the second year in a row, winning the 1-mile event with a time of 5 minutes, 08.11 seconds. As Gillick and four other Eagles scored in the opening day of the state championships, Flagstaff High sits in second place with 16 points behind Tempe (17) going into the rest of the DII finals, which will be held Saturday. -
City collision: Gilbert, Highland to meet in boys volleyball title match - East Valley Tribune - 05/09/13
It took more than four hours, nine sets, and an upset of the No. 1 seed, to create an all-Gilbert final in the boys volleyball state tournament. The fourth-seeded Tigers did pull it off, beating Desert Vista, three games to one, including the deciding game score of 30-28. Gilbert will defend its state title on its home floor against city-rival Highland at 7 p.m. on Saturday. -
Full house for Flagstaff track and field teams - AZ Sun - 05/09/13
Athletes from Flagstaff's three high schools have flocked to Mesa Community College to take part in the 2013 Arizona State Track and Field Championships. The Division II championships got started Wednesday with boys and girls pole vault, boys long jump, high jump and discus, and girls triple jump and shot put. Once field events were completed, the opening day finished with DII boys 4x800 relay, girls 1,600 and 800 and boys 3,200. -

In the past four seasons, Mesa Red Mountain softball has made the state tournament its own invitational. 2013 is no different. The three-time defending champions are now one win away from appearing in their fifth consecutive state championship game. Sixth-seeded Red Mountain advanced to the Division I tournament winners bracket semifinals after beating No. 10 Mesa Desert Ridge 11-0 in five innings Monday night at Rose Mofford Sports Complex in Phoenix. -

Softball: Empire scores 4 in the 7th to win 4-3 - Tucson Citize - 05/05/13
Only four softball players in the country have 70 or more RBIs this season and one of them is Empire’s Kelsey Smith. Smith came into the Division III quarterfinal game against Show Low with 70 RBIs and it looked like she would end her season with 70 after Show Low scored three unearned runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a commanding 3-0 lead over the top-seeded Ravens. -
Miami girls tennis dynasty continues - AZ Central - 05/04/13
The Miami girls tennis powerhouse added another championship Saturday night, defeating Phoenix Country Day 5-3 in the Division III final. Behind the strength of their deep roster, top-seeded Miami was able to put away a pesky Phoenix Country Day team. The doubles team of Celine Mavin and Ashley Madrid had the title-winning match as they scored a 10-4 victory to clinch. -

Tennis: Mike Lee claims D-II state singles title for Catalina Foothills - Tucson Citizen - 04/28/13
Catalina Foothills freshman Mike Lee captured the Division II state singles title Saturday afternoon at the Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale. Lee defeated Alex Bose of Ironwood Ridge (6-7, 7-5, 7-6). Lee comes from a line of champions including his older brother and former Sabino standout Jackson Lee. Jackson won a Division III state doubles title as a freshman in 2011 and sat out this year so he can play for Catalina Foothills his senior year. The brothers have already played doubles together in USTA play. -

No. 1 Tucson Salpointe’s Andrew Dunn slammed his racket. Everybody around the crowded Court 17 watching the doubles final saw it, including the two umpires. A collective groan rang out as the game-winning point in a third-set tiebreaker seemed headed seventh-seeded Phoenix Brophy Prep’s way. -

There were two performances this past week that we feel should be given special recognition. – Red Mountain junior Bre Macha pitched a perfect game in a 10-0 five-inning win over Mesa on Tuesday. Macha walked none and gave up no hits through 15 hitters, retiring all of them. She struck out 10 and induced five ground balls. -
State tennis matchups taking shape in Ariz. - Nogales International - 04/16/13

Benson played for John Ortega‘s Power club team, along with Gilbert Highland junior swingman Jake Toolson and Corona del Sol 6-10 junior forward/center Connor MacDougall, who all made first-team All-Easter Classic Showcase. -

John Blabe didn't fancy retirement much. After taking last year off, the long-time Antelope coach was announced as the new head coach for Kofa on Monday morning. “It stunk,” Blabe said of his one-year retirement. “I took about three months and I said this isn't for me. I'm refereeing football, basketball, baseball – not very well – and then you can only play so much golf.” -

Mark Nold has been hired as the new boys basketball coach at Chandler, district athletic director Marcus Williams said in an email. Nold won three titles in a row at Glendale Apollo from 2005-07, and has more recently been at Perry and, last year, Arizona College Prep. -

Now that March is here, spring sports are officially in full swing. All the preseason tournaments are in the books and regular-season action will heat up this week with a couple of big match ups. Track community missing Radspinner - AZ Star - 03/01/13
John Radspinner made such an impact coaching cross country and track and field at Rincon/University, athletes that he'd never even coached attended his recent farewell gathering. He is, essentially, irreplaceable. Radspinner, 62, resigned from his coaching duties in December because of health reasons. He has dealt with several cancerous tumors since age 14 and is currently dealing with more, which is keeping him from coaching his way - 100 percent. -
Paradise Valley QB Ryan Finley leads Arizona football scholar-athlete team - AZ Central - 02/28/13
The National Football Foundation Valley of the Sun Chapter put together a scholar-athlete team. These are seniors who received high marks in the classroom, football field and in the community as voted on by their coaches and schools. The team will be honored Saturday night at 7 at the Scottsdale Plaza Resort, 7200 N. Scottsdale Rd., with a banquet. -

For so long, the Arizona prep boys volleyball seasons were dominated by “Super Teams.” That one squad full of experience, size and talent and the clear-cut favorite to win the state championship. Scott Brown’s 40-hour-a-week job involved working with Special Olympics in high schools all over the state. He managed to squeeze in a state championship. Last Saturday, Glendale Joy Christian followed what the football team did in the fall and captured the school’s first boys basketball state title, taking the Division IV crown with a hard-fought, 74-63 win over Phoenix Arizona Lutheran Academy at Tim’s Toyota Center in Prescott Valley. -
A final shot missed but dreams still came true at Pinnacle - East Valley Tribune - 02/24/13
He pulled his jersey over his head in disgust before putting it back on. Eight painful seconds later, a captivating Division I boys basketball championship game was over and Pinnacle was left holding a runner-up trophy and their heads buried in their arms on the bench, Drew Bender pulled his jersey off for the last time. Eight seconds prior, it was Bender's contested 20-footer which could have tied the score, forced Corona del Sol into a final shot and possibly overtime. Pinnacle's girls had already lost earlier Saturday to a dynasty. Pinnacle's boys could have stopped Corona's in the making. -

Then the Window Rock Scouts burst onto the floor for the start of the boys basketball sectional championship game against Snowflake, one step away from the state tournament. Less than two hours later, surreal waves of fans, shooting photos and clamoring for autographs, mob the floor and swarm Window Rock senior guard Kyler Ashley — the smallest player at 5 feet, 7 inches — who scored 21 points in a 32-point rout. -

Charlie Kendrick's soccer teams have won 93 percent of their games. Do you fully realize what 93 percent is? It's an 81-game winning streak. It's seven state championships. It's when you consider 20-2 a down year. Do you know what he set out to be? A cello player. Kendrick was so stuck on the cello that when it came time to choose a high school, Salpointe Catholic or Palo Verde, he chose Palo Verde because Salpointe didn't have an orchestra. -

It was early December, and with basketball season heating up, Mesa High sixth man Felipe Velazco was having a difficult time leaving his house. A 17-year-old kid used to having his hair cut once a week started finding bald patches all over his scalp. He avoided mirrors. He shaved his head. He wore a hat. His schoolwork fell off. “I was really concerned for him,” said Lorenzo Velazco Sr., Felipe’s dad. “In school, he has to take his hat off. Some of the kids bully him because of the hair. PRESCOTT VALLEY — It’s a Thunderbird three-peat. Phoenix Thunderbird proved to be too tough for its opponents once again, winning its third consecutive team title Saturday at the Division III wrestling championships at Tim’s Toyota Center. Thunderbird finished with 132.5 points, topping the 91 of Rio Rico. Thunderbird now has five team championships in the last nine years, and were runner-up the other four years. -

PRESCOTT VALLEY - After failing to qualify for the state tournament last year, Sunnyside's Gabe Gonzales promised he'd never lose another match. He never looked back. Gonzales was one of three individual winners for the Blue Devils at the Division I state meet Friday night at Tim's Toyota Center, but it was his 7-5 victory in the 195-pound championship that locked up the team title, putting Sunnyside back on top. -

No other girls soccer player from Catalina High School has gone as far as Madison Irwin. Soon, she'll travel even further. After a historic high school career with the Trojans, Irwin will take her soccer talents to the next level at the University of New Mexico. She earned an academic and athletic scholarship to play for the Lobos starting this fall and will be among several local high school athletes signing letters of intent Wednesday. -

If this was a prelude to next Saturday’s Division III, Section I championship game, fans may be lining up around Chinle’s 6,000-seat Wildcat Den early in the morning to assure a seat for the championship game. Saturday, host Fort Defiance Window Rock (24-2) outlasted rival Chinle (24-5) 80-79 in overtime to clinch the No. 1 seed in the Section III tournament that begins Wednesday. Window Rock is ranked No. 2 by azcentral sports, Chinle No. 3.
