POSITION SUMMARY:

 

  • To provide leadership, supervision, and organization to facilitate an athletic program.
  • To develop team objectives that further the mission of the WHS Athletic Department in conjunction with the principles of Pursuing Victory with Honor.
  • To ensure the health, safety, and security of the student athletes at all times.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Pre-season responsibilities
  • Work with the athletic director on the timely employment of assistant coaches and volunteers;
  • Ensure staff attends the mandatory in-services and have certifications prior to first day;
  • Prior to student participation in any supervised activities, ensure all students are properly cleared to participate;
  • Assure team and athletic department policies and procedures are followed by all coaching staff;
  • Conduct a meeting for all parents outlining expectations of athletes for the season;
  • Conduct a pre-season athlete meeting regarding all team rules, department policies and procedures;
  • Inspects facilities for cleanliness and safety.

 

  1. In-season responsibilities
  • Administer all phases of the assigned sport;
  • Provide for the proper care and use of equipment and facilities;
  • Organize and implement all practice plans;
  • Maintain appropriate inventory control for all school and district equipment;
  • Communicate appropriately with students, parents, staff and media;
  • Supervise athletes at all times when they are involved in sport activities;
  • Continually encourage and model positive and healthy lifestyle for students;
  • Provide leadership for assistant coaches at all levels within the sport;
  • Present professional appearance and attitude at all times, and maintain a high standard of customer service;
  • Prepare and maintain appropriate activity reports;
  • Monitor activities on the field or court to prevent accidents;
  • Follow emergency action plan and procedures established in the event of an emergency;
  • Responsible for the availability and safekeeping of emergency equipment (rescue tubes, backboard, signs and other equipment).

 

  1. Post-season responsibilities
  • Inventory and store all equipment;
  • Evaluate all assistants and share the evaluation with each AD;
  • Conduct off-season conditioning and practice sessions, including spring and summer practices as outlined in AIA regulations.

 

  • Ability to perform rescue actions, administer first aid and CPR;
  • Complies with all rules, regulations and policies of the Governing Board
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES AND REGISTRATION REQUIRED:

  • Arizona Teaching Certificate or NFHS Level 1 Coaching Certification;
  • NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching and NFHS Concussion Awareness Certificate;
  • Must possess current First Aid and CPR Training Certification;
  • Must be able to pass a background check and maintain an Arizona IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. The head coach must serve as an appropriate role model for student athletes through his/her instructions and actions.
  2. The head coach must have substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and, at the same time, must continue to examine new theories and procedures pertinent to the field.
  3. Cheer coaches shall be AACCA (American Association of Cheerleading Coaches and Advisors) Safety Certified and shall provide proof of certification to the Athletic Director of the local campus and the AIA office. 
  4. Has the ability to organize and supervise a total sports program. . 

JOB GOAL:

 To instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success. Additionally, the coach must instruct and demonstrate behaviors that lead to socially acceptable character development, self-discipline, self-confidence, and pride of accomplishment in the student athletes.

REPORTS TO:

The athletic director, who will provide overall objectives and final evaluation in conjunction with the high school principal.

SUPERVISES:

 In several instances, the head coach must advise, coordinate and support the staff of high school assistant coaches and middle school coaches in conjunction with the athletic director and respective principal.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Has a thorough knowledge of all the athletic policies approved by the Sanders Unified School District and is responsible for their implementation by the entire staff of the sports program.
  2. Has knowledge of existing system, state and league regulations; implements same consistently and interprets them for staff.
  3. Serves as a mentor to each athlete to demonstrate and promote the development of the character traits of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship in student athletes.
  4. Maintains discipline in accordance with school, district, and AIA guidelines. Gives constant attention to a student athlete's grades and conduct.
  5. Trains and informs the coaching staff and encourages professional growth through clinic attendance according to local policy.
  6. Directs student managers, assistants and statisticians.
  7. Establishes the fundamental philosophy, skills and techniques to be taught by staff.
  8. Determines discipline and delineates procedures concerning due process when the enforcement of discipline is necessary and contacts parents when a student is dropped or becomes ineligible.
  9. Understands the proper administrative line of command and refers all requests or grievances through proper channels.
  10. The coach is aware of all public/staff/departmental meetings that require attendance.
  11. Delegates specific duties, supervises implementation and, at season's end, analyzes staff effectiveness and evaluates all assistants.
  12. Performs such other duties which may be assigned by the athletic director/principal.

 

ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES:

  1. Assists in the necessary preparation to hold scheduled sport events or practices and adheres to scheduled facility times. Coordinates program with maintenance and school employees.
  2. Provides assistance, guidance, and safeguards for each participant, by his/her presence at all practices, games, and while traveling,
  3. Provides documentation to fulfill state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent and eligibility.
  4. Provides proper safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment sites.
  5. Initiates programs and policies concerning injuries, medical attention and emergencies.
  6. Completes paperwork on all disabling athletic injuries on proper forms and submits to athletic office within 24 hours.
  7. Advise the athletic director about his/her sport and recommends policy, method or procedural changes.
  8. Assist athletes in their college or advanced educational selection.

FINANCE AND EQUIPMENT:

  1. Participates in the budgeting function with the athletic director by establishing requirements for the next season. Recommend equipment guidelines as to type, style, color or technical specifications. Is responsible for operating within budget appropriations.
  2. The coach is accountable for all equipment and collects the cost of any equipment that is lost or not returned. Arranges for issuing, storing and reconditioning of equipment and submits annual inventory and current records concerning same.
  3. Properly marks and identifies all equipment before issuing or storing.
  4. Monitors equipment rooms and coaches' offices, authorizes who may enter, issue or requisition equipment.
  5. Permits the athletes to only be in authorized areas of the building at the appropriate times.
  6. Examine locker rooms before and after practices and games, checking on general cleanliness of the facility. Responsible for cleanliness and maintenance of specific sport equipment.
  7. Secures all doors, lights, windows and locks before leaving building if custodians are not on duty.
  8. Instills in each player a respect for equipment and school property, its care and proper use.

PUBLIC RELATIONS:

  1. Organizes parents, coaches, players and guests for preseason meetings.
  2. Promotes the sport within the school through recruiting athletes who are not in another sports program and promotes the sport outside the school through news media, little league programs, or in any other feasible manner.
  3. Responsible for the quality, effectiveness and validity of any oral or written release to local media.
  4. Responsible for maintaining good public relations with news media, booster club, parents, officials, volunteers and fans.
  5. Presents information to news media concerning schedules, tournaments and results.

Purpose Statement

The job of Head Coach is done for the purpose/s of designing and implementing the athletic program for assigned sport(s) in accordance with applicable rules and regulations; providing supervision of other coaching personnel; providing supervision of students during all aspects of the program; using sound instructional techniques in overseeing program activities; serving as a positive role model to student athletes; and serving in a liaison capacity for the school and program with other schools both within and/or outside the district, to the community, and to various organizations.  Individuals in this job classification are assigned to a position for assigned sport(s) and oversees all aspects of the respective athletic program(s).

Essential Functions

  • Assesses student athletes for the purpose of providing feedback to students on their individual performance and/or determining team placement.
  • Attends a variety of meetings, workshops, conferences, etc. for the purpose of receiving and conveying information related to their role.
  • Conducts a variety of supporting activities (e.g. parent orientations, recognition events, banquets, etc.) for the purpose of providing information regarding the program and/or recognizing participants’ accomplishments.
  •  Develops team and individual practice regimes for student athletes (e.g. strength, speed, agility, nutritional, injury prevention, etc.) for the purpose of enhancing and improving their performance.
  • Develops game strategies/plans (e.g. analyzes opponent strengths and weaknesses, analyzing athlete abilities, creating plays/strategies, etc.) for the purpose of preparing the team and individual student athletes for the competition.
  • Guides other coaching personnel as may be appropriate in instructional techniques, organization of practices, supervision guidelines and responsibilities, etc. for the purpose of providing guidance and mentoring.
  • Identifies program needs for the purpose of providing recommendations of expenditures for activities, equipment, supplies, etc. that will enhance the assigned athletic program.
  • Implements practice schedules and related events (e.g. usage of facilities and equipment, staff assignments, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring efficient program operation.
  • Instructs student athletes for the purpose of promoting individual growth in athletic skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
  • Maintains a variety of records (e.g. game/student athlete statistics, insurance, signed permission forms, emergency information, schedules, equipment inventories, etc.) for the purpose of complying with district, athletic conference, state requirements, and/or report scores and strategies to local news media.
  • Monitors student athletes’ academic eligibility for the purpose of both complying with AIA requirements as well as providing appropriate intervention (e.g. counseling, tutoring, etc.) to students identified as needing assistance to maintain their athletic eligibility.
  • Oversees assistant coaches, student managers, volunteers, etc. for the purpose of providing direction and monitoring activities. 
  • Promotes athletic program through a variety of activities (e.g. conducts off-season clinics, information on skill-camps, attends community meetings, etc.) for the purpose of increasing interest and participation.
  • Responds to inquiries of students, parents, other school personnel, media representatives, college representatives, etc. for the purpose of providing information, assistance and/or direction.
  • Keeps their school athletic director informed when issues arise that impact the school’s athletic program (e.g. liability concerns, parent concerns, etc.).
  • Provides appropriate and prudent supervision for all athletes and students involved in the program.
  • Explains and discusses the PVUSD Athletic Code of Conduct with all athletes in their program.
  • Maintains high standards of personal conduct.  Coaches should serve as role models for their athletes.
  • Ensures that all coaches involved with their program, whether paid or volunteer are cleared through the PVUSD Human Resources Department.

Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Work Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some climbing and balancing, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 20% sitting, 40% walking, and 40% standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
